Scoliosis Treatment Experience

The general manifestations of scoliosis: 1. The shoulders on both sides are not the same height; 2. One shoulder blade is high; 3. The legs are not the same length; 4. The trunk and thorax are offset to one side; 5. The back or waist is asymmetrical, one side is obviously higher than the other side.

If parents find that their children have the above conditions, they can take the following 6 steps of simple screening at home:

First, let the child take off his clothes or wear tight underwear, stand barefoot naturally, and the parents stand behind the child to observe:

  1. See if the child’s shoulders are at the same height;
  2. Touch the shoulder blades on the child’s back with your hand to see if one shoulder blade bulges backwards;
  3. Touch the shoulder blades on the child’s back with your hand to see if the lowest ends of the two shoulder blades are at the same height;
  4. Then let the child bend over and look at the ground, with both hands hanging naturally, touch and compare whether the child’s back is bulging on both sides, and whether it is symmetrical;
  5. Touch and compare whether the child’s waist is bulging on both sides, and whether it is symmetrical;
  6. Use the middle finger and index finger to pinch the spinous process of the spine and draw it down to see if a normal straight line can be drawn.

In traditional Chinese medicine treatment, tendon massage and bone correction are common treatment methods. By observing the patient's posture, such as whether there are high and low shoulders, whether the tension of the shoulder blades and back muscles on both sides is symmetrical, and whether the degree of heel wear is different, the possibility of scoliosis can be inferred. The Adam's forward bending test (bending forward) is used to observe whether the patient's back muscles are at the same height, and then the corresponding treatment method is adopted. Common treatments are as follows:

  1. Chinese medicine conditioning: regulate the balance of internal organs, qi, blood, yin and yang from a holistic perspective.
  2. Muscle adjustment: improve unbalanced muscle tissue through acupuncture, massage, tendon massage, cupping and other methods.
  3. Traditional Chinese medicine bone correction: by adjusting the tension of soft tissues on both sides of the spine, the spine is relatively returned to the neutral position before the bones close, and the normal biodynamic line is restored or a new balance is established.
  4. Posture correction: exercise the weak side muscles to restore muscle strength, stretch tense muscles to achieve relaxation, correct bad posture, and improve the aggravation of body deformities.

[Indications]: Traditional Chinese medicine bone setting treatment is suitable for patients with mild to moderate, postural, small angle, functional scoliosis, especially adolescent patients.

[Contraindications]: For patients with severe scoliosis, congenital scoliosis, intraspinal spinal cord lesions, osteoporosis, spinal structural deformities, etc., traditional Chinese medicine bone setting may not achieve the expected results.

[Precautions]: Before receiving traditional Chinese medicine bone setting treatment, consult a professional physician in combination with the full-length frontal and lateral X-rays of the spine to understand your condition and treatment plan. During the treatment, parents urge their children to maintain the correct posture, avoid sitting still for a long time, and have incorrect posture to avoid affecting the treatment effect.

For scoliosis, idiopathic scoliosis is generally the main type, which is common in adolescents during development, and is more common in women. The treatment method is generally chiropractic therapy, and early detection and early treatment have better effects. Scoliosis generally occurs in lumbar scoliosis in the early stage, and thoracic scoliosis is generally secondary.  When parents find that their children's shoulders are asymmetrical, it is already thoracic scoliosis. Therefore, once lumbar scoliosis appears, it should be treated immediately in the early stage to control the aggravation of thoracic scoliosis. For patients with obvious deformity or conservative treatment, surgical correction is required. Generally speaking, obvious scoliosis refers to thoracic scoliosis reaching more than 45°, and lumbar scoliosis reaching more than 60°, S-shaped deformity. Obvious thoracic scoliosis not only affects the appearance of adolescent spine, but also early-onset scoliosis will affect cardiopulmonary function. In this case, surgical correction should be considered. Lumbar deformity generally has little effect on cardiopulmonary function, and scoliosis is generally based on early detection and early treatment. Scoliosis should generally be controlled within the range of 20°, which generally does not affect function. If it exceeds the degree, brace correction is required, and more serious surgical correction should be considered.

In addition to treatment, prevention is also critical. By improving lifestyle habits, receiving regular treatment and maintaining a good posture, the aggravation of scoliosis can be effectively prevented, especially for children in the growth period.
